Topic: Doxycycline 50mg for Dogs - Dosage and Effects

Posted by DogLover123:
Hey everyone! My doggy has been prescribed doxycycline 50mg to treat an infection. I'm a bit nervous about giving it to her since she's never had antibiotics before. How does this work? Any advice?

Hi DogLover123, don't worry! Doxycycline is commonly used for dogs and can be very effective in treating various infections like respiratory issues or skin conditions. It’s an antibiotic that belongs to the tetracycline group.

The typical dosage is usually 5-6 mg per pound of body weight, given every 24 hours. Since your dog was prescribed doxycycline 50mg tablets, you'll need to split them according to her weight. For example, if she weighs 25 pounds and the recommended dose is about 125 mg, you would give her two and a half of those 50mg tablets daily.

It's important that your dog takes all doses as prescribed. Skipping or stopping early can lead to the infection not being fully treated. Also, make sure she stays well-hydrated and monitor for any side effects like vomiting, diarrhea, or loss of appetite. If you notice anything unusual, contact your vet right away.

I agree with PetCareGuru's advice. My dog has been on doxycycline a couple of times before, and he responded well to it. It’s important to keep him on schedule and not let any doses go missed.

One tip I found helpful was hiding the pill in some wet food or peanut butter if your doggy doesn't like taking pills directly. This makes giving medicine less stressful for both you and her.

Thanks so much, PetCareGuru and HappyPaws! That's really helpful advice. I'll make sure to keep a close eye on my doggy and give the medication as directed. Also, hiding it in some peanut butter sounds like a great idea.

Do any of you have any tips for making sure she finishes her full course? She can be a bit picky sometimes.

You're welcome! I'm glad that helped. To ensure your doggy takes all doses, consistency is key. Try to give the medication at the same time every day to establish a routine. You could also consider setting reminders on your phone or using a pill organizer with compartments for each dose.

If she's particularly picky about the taste, you might want to try different hiding methods until you find one that works best. Some dogs prefer cheese, while others like it wrapped in a tiny bit of chicken or turkey. Always check with your vet first if there are any dietary restrictions associated with her condition.

Lastly, stay positive and be patient. Your dog can sense stress, so the more relaxed you are during medication time, the better she'll respond. Good luck!

I totally agree with PetCareGuru's tips! Another thing to consider is praising her after each dose. Positive reinforcement goes a long way in making your dog associate taking medicine with something positive.

And remember, it’s crucial that you follow up with the vet once the course of antibiotics is completed. They might want to do a follow-up check to ensure that the infection has cleared completely and there are no lingering issues.

Good luck! And keep us updated on how she's doing!

Thank you both so much for all your advice! I'll start giving her the medication as directed, hide it in some peanut butter or cheese, and praise her afterward. I will also set reminders to stay consistent with the schedule.

I’ll definitely keep you updated on how she’s doing!
