Forum Topic: Understanding Prednisone 20 mg

Posted by: HealthyHippo

Hi everyone,

I’ve been prescribed Prednisone 20 mg for my asthma. I’m a bit nervous about starting it because of the side effects I've heard about. Can anyone share their experience or advice on how to manage this dosage?

Hello, HealthyHippo! Thanks for reaching out with your concern.

Prednisone is indeed a powerful medication that can be very effective in reducing inflammation and managing asthma symptoms like yours. At 20 mg per day, you’re at the higher end of the spectrum, but this dosage might be necessary to control your condition effectively.

HealthyHippo, here are some key points about Prednisone:

  1. Purpose: It’s a corticosteroid that helps reduce inflammation and suppresses your immune system's response.
  2. Dosage Timing: Try to take it in the morning so you can avoid side effects like insomnia.
  3. Duration: Usually, doctors prescribe this at 20 mg for a short period, then gradually taper down.

If you have any specific concerns about side effects or how long you'll need to be on Prednisone, feel free to ask more questions. It's important to discuss these with your doctor as well!

Thanks so much, DrFriendly! That helps a lot to know the purpose and timing of taking it.

One thing I’m worried about is weight gain and mood changes. Can you give me some tips on how to handle those?

Absolutely, HealthyHippo!

Weight Gain:- Balanced Diet: Focus on lean proteins, whole grains, fresh fruits, and vegetables.- Regular Exercise: Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise most days of the week.- Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water to help maintain your metabolism.

Mood Changes:- Routine Sleep: Try to get a consistent 7-9 hours per night.- Mindfulness and Stress Management: Techniques such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, or yoga can be very helpful.- Social Support: Keep in touch with friends and family. Sometimes just talking about your feelings can provide relief.

If you notice significant changes in mood or weight that concern you, it’s important to reach out to your healthcare provider for further guidance.

Hey HealthyHippo,

I was on Prednisone 20 mg for a month last year due to severe allergies. Weight gain is the most common side effect I experienced but following DrFriendly's advice helped me manage it pretty well. I also made sure to check in regularly with my doctor about any changes.

Good luck! Remember, staying proactive about your health and keeping an open line of communication with your healthcare team will go a long way!
